Tick tock

Surely even our board will appreciate things have moved on from 10 years ago.

And they must have known what they were hiring. It’d be like a club appointing Tony Pulis and then sacking him after a few months because he’s not playing tiki taka.

What puzzles me is his inability to try and change a game. Fair enough you set out with your plan. But when it’s found out and failing then even the least knowledgeable amongst us would try something different [eh]

Citeh must be bricking it.

I seem to remember people levelling similar accusations at Guardiola in his first season at City, as those being levelled at Sarri now

Very true, however pep was given unlimited funds like spending about 150m on full backs, spending 50m stones then going and getting laporte etc, so over time he was able to implement his style of football.

Sarri won't get those sort of funds (or time) so has to do what's best with what we've got, not continue with round pegs/square holes, eg Kante.

If jorginho starts CDM Saturday then we might aswell all fcuk off to the pub by half time.

So we go back to the one constant in this story, which is the board. It’s always the manager’s fault, never theirs...

Sarri
by CLL_JT26, 06/12, 11:50 @ Famous

No one is blameless, but is it the boards fault that sarri spent about 50m on jorginho this summer, when we already had the best CDM in the world at our club?

Not to mention already having fabregas if he wanted a player similar to jorginho.

This 50m would have been better off spent on a striker.

Managers haven’t bought players at this club for decades now, the club buys them. I have heard stories that Sarri wanted other strikers (one in particular) and didn’t get them, so he’s working with what he’s got. The club bought Morata at great expense for the last manager who they then decided to sack.

I know what you mean, the club bought Jorginho clearly because Sarri wanted him. But the role people associate with Kante does not exist in the system Sarri has always played, so I think that’s all a red herring really. Jorginho is not a defensive midfielder and he’s not being asked to play a defensive midfield role.

I'm seeing a pattern of just employing 2 strikers in the full squad. Pretty sure Conte and Sarri would prefer a minimum of 3. This is the sort of thing the club is doing that restricts a managers options. Giroud isn't the youngest of fittest of players so using a 2 pronged attack is a risk Sarri isn't prepared to take. I see the point Sarri is very stubborn in that we will play his way - I also see players not doing what they should be doing.

I'm all for ditching 60% of the current squad BEFORE my attention turns to Sarri. Some of the issues we see today were here way before Sarri arrived.

As you say, critisiscms of Sarri’s stubbornness from fans is one thing, but the club would/should have known what they were getting when they employed him. If they didn’t want someone with a fanatical devotion to a way of playing, then they should never have hired Sarri. If they knew what they were getting and will give him the time it needs for that system to come good, they’re going to need to give him at least a season, if not longer. And they need to back him in the transfer market (both incoming and probably even more importantly, outgoings)

I think his biggest problem last night was all the changes, I said to a few people before the game that it worried me cos it was losing these types of games last season that cost us top four. Should’ve gone as strong as possible and tried to get the three points, then City could almost be a bit of a free hit.
We’ve just got so many average players in this squad, that’s the main reason why we finished fifth last season and tenth two seasons before that, and keep getting performances like this IMHO.

Spot on.

Only Arsenal have more goals and assists from substitutes this season. I appreciate that's not the full picture but shows that his subs make an impact.

I also think part of the not changing system is to ensure we learn it. You can't learn if you ditch the approach at the first sign of trouble.

If you look at Napoli they got incrementally better season after season.

There is no doubt we need new players as well. A striker that can score goals on a regular basis would be a great start!

This season is already feeling similar to the Scolari season. [hide]

No tick-tock from me, the players are letting us all down.

Sarri needs to kick a few arses because I'm seeing gutless wimps taking to the pitch.

Agreed, the players to blame.. but only in part.

Sarriball has no identity. It’s a hoax. Just possession without purpose. He’s got the Ti in Tiki and the Ta in taka but the Bloke hasn’t got the full ticket. Interesting viewing the game from a side angle last night, clear as day that the set up won’t work.

Con man.

Sarri
by Famous, 06/12, 20:53 @ 1WB

Devil’s advocate - what if the players were better, and better at carrying out what they were being asked to do? Then it absolutely would have identity and a purpose.
Bad execution can ruin any good plan on paper.

Sarri
by 1WB, 06/12, 21:19 @ Famous

They’re set up wrong for it. CF WFs, miles apart... the whole system relies on combination play. The shape they’re being made to play doesn’t allow it. You have to be close for that to work. Pedro/Willian on one wing, hazard on the other.. no suport through middle.

This is before I get to playing a technically weak CDM in an attacking position that absolutely relies on high technical ability.

Shambles.

You’ve lost me a bit there tbh. I’ve had a long day so that’s probably me :-D
I just think calling someone who’s played this system and done well with it in the past, a fraud, is OTT personally, especially when it’s a system that is always going to need time (much more than four months) to be executed as required, let alone perfected.
Maybe it just won’t work in this league, maybe we’ll never have the players required to carry it off as intended, but there’s a reason the likes of Sacchi and Guardiola, two of the all-time best and most innovative football managers in their own right (some would argue they’re geniuses and presided over the two best club sides ever) can’t praise Sarri highly enough.
