Ridiculous decision IMO.
The shot would have ended up in the crowd.
The ball hit the defender’s elbow, whilst he was turning in mid-air. I just don’t get why it was given.
Does this decision mean you don’t put a wall in front of a direct free kick, in the penalty area when VAR is being used?
joke of a decision
I thought it was a shocking decision.
VAR...wrongs rights.
Correct according to the new rules though, apparently.
The new rules are next season though...is that right?!
The ref took so long to decide, he even walked away then returned to the screen. That suggested he wasn’t sure of whatever rules they are going by.
Too much, imo, with what I have seen so far this season, is down to interpretation. One ref will give it, the other won’t. One person watching on screen, in his VAR office, somewhere in the world, will give him it, the next one won’t.
In the Porto v Roma tie, in the last minute of extra time, the VAR person, in his office, didn’t give Roma a penalty, when the defender clipped the attackers heel, it didn’t go to the ref. The offence, or non offence is given every time anywhere else on the pitch.
My opinion is that VAR should only be used for offside and goal line decisions. But there must be enough cameras used so that the decision cannot be questioned.
Next season. And even then it has to be on target and not swerving into row Z
UEFA have been enforcing this season it seems:
'However, Head of Uefa referees Robert Rossetti told the Times in January that - when VAR was introduced into this season's Champions League - officials would penalise any unnatural arm movement that makes contact with the ball.
"The big challenge is the position of the arm. When the arm is totally out of the body above the shoulder it should be penalised. If the defender is making the body bigger in order to block the ball it is not fair.
"It is different if the defender is challenging or playing the ball and it rebounds. But if he is looking to block a cross or a shot on goal and the player is trying to spread his body then it is a handball."'
That middle bit must be why he gave it.
So I guess all the ref had to decide was 'is the arm/hand away from the body?' It was so it is indeed a penalty.
Getting silly now.
Yeah, but VAR is going to sort things out...
Makes corruption a little easier...see Spurs v Chelsea and clear offside
UEFA have now come out and said as much: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47495707
The commentator and McManaman (co-commentator) called it pretty much straight away that he'd give a peno. They'd done their research on the new guidelines given to refs, and they were right. The Ref followed through on it.
Oh, and f*** PSG
and
Their name is on the cup; shades of Di Matteo 2012.
Was having a similar discussion today.
And me.
