I don’t know whether the punishment is too much or not, I don’t really have an opinion on what should have happened to him, but to me it’s clear, I cannot believe he didn’t know two important things, that it was Harry and Meghan who had the baby and that Meghan is mixed race. Knowing these two things he posted a picture portraying a baby with black ancestry as a monkey, I get he is unlikely to have knowingly meant a racial slur, but if he can’t see in this day and age how wrong that is then at the very least he needs to be educated.

I know Sugar did something last year, and that was wrong, and I remember now about Prince Harry and the nazi thing, and that is also very wrong, as is giving a platform to racists on other shows. I am not defending any of that nor asking for a public execution of Danny Baker.

If you were an HR manager and a middle aged white man in your company did what Danny Baker did you couldn’t just laugh it off as a joke, there would have to be consequences, at the very least you would have to get the person involved to genuinely reflect on what underlying character trait makes him not realise that implying a person of colour is a monkey, whatever the intent, is wrong.

Monkeys in human clothes are not in themselves racist, and people being accused of racism with no proof is regrettable, but it in no way defends what Baker did.

When Meghan’s mother goes back to the US she will tell other black people how in England that a man who she had almost definitely never heard of portrayed her grandson as a monkey on twitter and how many British people are actually defending him and say “Oh it’s just a joke”
